Near the end of 2019, I realized it was time to start investing more in my business – not financially, but more of ‘me’. I knew that would require adding structure and boundaries around the time spent outside of my full-time job. It also required me to figure out who ‘me’ was.

In college I totally had it together. However 20+ years later I realized I had become a complete workaholic, addicted to fulfilling someone else’s dream. I wracked my brain trying to uncover what my 20-something self had that my 40-something self had lost.

The answer was…vision.

Not my sight – although bifocals have become an extremely close friend of mine over the years. But a sense of who I truly was and what my life goals were. What values did I want to maintain and what areas did I want to grow in…and why?

The solution…a vision board!

I used to love making them! Little did I realize that what I thought was just a Saturday afternoon fun-day clipping my way through magazines was actually a very grounding tool.

So, in December of 2019, I dug out some old magazines, scissors, and my whiteboard and got to work.

Centered is a picture of 20-something me – the photo was taken in a parking garage on my way to see one of my favorite bands at the time. Live music brings life to my soul and I can’t help but smile every time I see that picture and feel the rush of excitement before the show.

Surrounding are:

  • things that bring me joy

  • my strengths – in case I came upon a day I needed reminding

  • goals I wanted to work on in 2020

I made a point to look at it every morning to initiate the inspiration. And after a few months I developed a consulting project plan, outlined some blogs, and began creating online courses (something that was completely new to me!). I also opened up a social media page and outlined a few post ideas. It’s been such a fun and rewarding process!

Please don’t get me wrong. Absolutely none of it is perfect - but it’s a start. And I truly doubt I’d have begun it, nevertheless actually stuck with it, without my vision board reminding me of who I am and what matters most to me. It was the daily connection with my bright-eyed 20-something self that encouraged me to use my time wisely and stay focused. It’s what kept, and continues to keep, me centered and motivated. With every new endeavor, I’m learning and growing and refining my products!

Please note, the vision board was the boost…not the end game. I didn’t just daydream about a strong core and by evening could hold a four minute plank. The vision board was the springboard. Combining it with structure and planning is what began turning my visions into reality.

Let’s grow together!
