To be honest – it’s my voice. I was the only-child, introverted extrovert that sat quietly during a meeting. I observed the people around me – their posture, their tone, who was listening, and who just wanted to be heard. I had ideas which I scribbled down on the napkin I found in my pocket and awaited my turn to provide my thoughts and feedback. But often that turn didn’t come, and I didn’t ask for it.

I was the person that waited patiently to be promoted. Hoping my hard work and determination would pave the path to move into a position where my voice was not only welcome but required. But too often I was told I had worked myself into a corner. I kept too many plates spinning. It would be easier to hire someone with specialty skills. No one else will do what you do, I was told.

I was a generalist. And I thought it was a bad thing.

Why did I continue plate spinning, feeling less than adequate, and knowing I was about as far as I’d get in the company? Because I had passion – for the mission, for my work family, for our products. Because it wasn’t about me. For me, it’s always been about we.

Today, I am still a generalist. But years of life experience and continuous learning and growing have taught me that being a generalist is totally awesome! I no longer see the ‘specialty skilled’ as my opponents. They are my teammates. I’m the baker, with my floury hands on my hips, looking at all of the amazing ingredients and imagining the prize-winning outcome from bringing it all together. The baker can’t achieve success without the ingredients. And the ingredients can’t create the Best in Show pie without the baker.

I realized that we need each other. And in recognizing that, I finally became aware that I’m needed too. Being a generalist is my specialty.

Why did I choose the tagline “Remember my results, not my name.”? First, because I know that my perspective and skill set coupled with your amazing team and their unique qualities can lead to awesome results. And second, because I’m 100% honest when I say that it always has been and always will be about we, not me.

I want to see your organization succeed in whatever new endeavor you’re about to undertake! If at the end, no one remembers the quirky lady from the one woman show consulting group but they see a boatload of positive outcomes from working with her, I’m calling it a win!

Let the adventures begin!
